SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The project will take place at “La Città dell'Utopia”, SCI Italia's local project in Rome, which can be described as a social and cultural lab of active citizenship aiming for a new model of  local and global development. The project originates from reflections on the social consequences of the current economic crisis, affecting to various extent all the European countries, Italy included. The economic crisis is generating high rates of youth unemployment and increasingly issues of social exclusion. The project, acknowledging volunteering as a tool for societal transformation and a key factor for improving social cohesion, will actively  involve the EVS volunteers in SCI Italia’s activities (volunteering projects, raising awareness events etc.) for the social inclusion of youth with fewer opportunities, migrant people etc… The project is meant as a learning process for the EVS volunteers innvolved – which will be acknowledged throigh the Youthpass certificate –, while methodologies of non-formal learning will be used throughout the project to achieve its objectives.

 
SCI ITALIA

Service Civil International aims at developing solidarity and promoting tolerance between people, encouraging and supporting participation of youngsters in volunteering activities, both inside and outside the European
Union.
For this reason, SCI organizes actions and campaigns for the promotion of peace, international solidarity and mutual understanding besides workcamps and long-term voluneering projects. Activities organized by SCI, both at the international and local level, are coordinated by the National Secretariat of SCI, which office is located in Rome.
 
SCI Italia's “La Città dell'Utopia” project started in 2003 and is located in San Paolo neighborhood (via Valeriano 3F – Rome), a popular suburban area inhabited mainly by elderly people, migrant families coming from Latin America, northeastern Europe, Asia and Africa, University students. The building hosts several informal groups and other associations working with/for transexual and transgender peoplem, migrants, promoting sustainable means of transportation etc…
The main activities carried out in La Città dell’Utopia are as following:
– organizing and hosting of international workcamps, north/south trainings and international youth meetings;
– raising awareness events;
– organizing conferences, meetings, festivals, photo exhibitions, thematic meals; courses of music, group dancing, tai chi, African percussion, belly dance,  language courses,  ceramics,  gardening; workshops  on
sustainable lifestyles such as recycling, composting, reduction in consumptions and renewable sources of
energy, garbage recycling; promotion of participative forms of active citizenship.
 
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED EVS PROJECT:

–  to involve  youngsters in  the  promotion  of international  voluntarism  as  a practice of  active  citizenship, intercultural education and personal and social growth;
–  to  spread  news  about  the  initiatives  organized  in  Italy  in  order  to  promote  intercultural  respect  and international solidarity;
– to give volunteers the chance of actively participate in the implementation and development of a specific project, which is an opportunity of individual growth;
– to facilitate relationships and boost cooperation among different informal groups and entities hosted by La Città dell'Utopia
 
VOLUNTEERS WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:

The two volunteers will be involved in the following activities, mainly at “La Città dell'Utopia” in  collaboration with another EVS volunteer that will start his service in September 2017:
 
a) supporting the coordination of the work of local and international volunteers (groups and individuals) in order to ensure the running of the planned schedule;
b) helping in the elaboration and the organization of public cultural events and workshops on active citizenship, especially regarding the communication, logistic and operational levels;
c) implementing the international dimension through the coordination of international exchanges, workcamps and seminars;
d) supporting the communication tasks for disseminating activities taking place in La Città dell'Utopia;
e) facilitating the social inclusion of refugees and asylum seekers that volunteer in La Città dell'Utopia.
In the proper dynamic of the project it is important that the voluntary manages to find the possibility to develop a personal activity following the lines of the project and the hosting organization. In order to enable the volunteers to implement their personal projects, a permanent support will be proposed in order the realize their ideas and project within “La Città dell'Utopia”.
Volunteers should have a good attitude and willing to work in touch with different persons.
 
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR:

Reliable, communicative and very motivated volunteers. It's very important that each volunteer is used to teamwork, that he/she is sociable, has sense of humour, is flexible according to different situations.
