Make a more sustainable workcamp with the ‘Climate Justice’ guide!

Climate Justice has created a guide for a more sustainable workcamp, with which they want to provide a set of tools and ideas to bring climate justice closer to the volunteer camps on our territory.

At SCI, we believe that climate justice is an essential pillar in peacebuilding, and for this reason, the “Climate for Peace” program was created, which has been actively involved in local volunteering for years. Moreover, a local group of the SCI called “Climate Justice” works following this guidelines. Climate Justice has created a guide for a more sustainable workcamp, with which they want to provide a set of tools and ideas to bring climate justice closer to the volunteer camps on our territory. It has been divided into 4 sections: water saving, energy saving, more sustainable nutrition and waste reduction.

In the energy saving part, there can be found some advises as: use sources of renewable energy if they can be installed at the volunteer camp, avoid using the car or use the public transport and vehicles with an electric assistance. In the water saving section, there are indications as: put water economizers on the taps, use biodegradable (phosphate-free) detergent, baking soda or vinegar for washing or do not throw oil, search for used oil collection bins or go to the nearest waste station. In the waste reduction chapter, some indications are also provided, for example: use reusable plastic pitchers or glasses for drinks, if you have outdoor space in the countryside, you can make home composting with food and gardening scraps, or avoid buying bottled water and drink tap water. To conclude, there is a part where some advices related to a more sustainable nutrition are compiled: base your diet on plant products as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, tubers, nuts and legumes; buy seasonal and local products or take advantage of the fruit that is in poor condition to make jam.

In this guide you can also finde a part with practical activities that can be done during the camp as how to make your own detergent, soap or toothpaste.

You can find the guide here! We hope it is useful for you and you find it interesting.
